LGM and Late Glacial glacier advances in the Cordillera Real and Cochabamba

چکیده
Surface exposure dating (SED) is an innovative tool being already widely applied for moraine dating and for Late Quaternary glacier and climate reconstruction. Here we present exposure ages of 28 boulders from the Cordillera Real and the Cordillera Cochabamba, Bolivia. Our results indicate that the local Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) 5 in the Eastern Cordilleras occurred at ∼22–25 ka and thus synchronous to the global temperature minimum. We were also able to date several Late Glacial moraines to ∼11–13 ka, which likely document lower temperatures and increased precipitation (" Coipasa " humid phase). Additionally, we recognize the existence of older Late Glacial moraines recalculated to ∼15 ka from published cosmogenic nuclide data. Those may 10 coincide with the cold Heinrich 1 event in the North Atlantic region and the pronounced " Tauca " humid phase. We conclude that (i) exposure ages in the tropical Andes may have been substantially overestimated so far due to methodological uncertainties, and (ii) although precipitation plays an important role for glacier mass balances in the tropical Andes, it becomes the dominant forcing for glaciation only in the drier and thus 15 more precipitation-sensitive regions further west and south.

متن کاملEquilibrium-Line Altitudes of Late Quaternary Glaciers in the Zardkuh Mountain, Iran
Equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) of former glaciers in the Zardkuh Mountain of the Zagros Mountain Range were reconstructed from glacial-geologic data on former ice limits by using various methods. In the study area various types of glacial landforms such as outwash fans, moraines and well developed glacial cirques are observed. The results suggest that ELA were depressed 1433 m below to prese...
متن کاملInvestigation of the effects and evidence of late Quaternary glaciers on the Binaloud Heights
The purpose of this study was to identify evidence of late Quaternary glaciers in the northern highlands of Binalood. Topographic maps, satellite imagery and climatic data are the tools and data used in this study. Arc gis 10.4 software was used for data analysis. Quaternary glacier evidences were identified based on four types of evidences including morphic indices, climatic evidences, geomorp...
متن کاملLast glacial maximum equilibrium-line altitude and paleo-temperature reconstructions for the Cordillera de Mérida, Venezuelan Andes
The pattern and magnitude of glacier equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) lowerings in the tropics during the last glacial maximum (LGM) are topics of current debate. In the northern tropics, paleo-ELA data are particularly limited, inhibiting the ability to make regional and large-scale paleoclimatic inferences. To improve these records, nine paleo-glaciers in the Venezuelan Andes were reconstructe...
متن کاملHolocene glacier fluctuations in the Peruvian Andes indicate northern climate linkages.
The role of the tropics in triggering, transmitting, and amplifying interhemispheric climate signals remains a key debate in paleoclimatology. Tropical glacier fluctuations provide important insight on regional paleoclimatic trends and forcings, but robust chronologies are scarce. Here, we report precise moraine ages from the Cordillera Vilcabamba (13 degrees 20'S) of southern Peru that indicat...
